About Coffee

(Please see our Glossary, Encyclopaedia and Intelligent Hyperlinking FAQ's)

Introduction

Coffee is a beverage made of an infusion of ground coffee beans with water. There are many methods of infusing the coffee and many varieties of coffee beans.

History

Coffee history stretches back as far as 800BC and the various later methods of infusion have a history stretching back hundreds of years. Etheopians were aware that eating the coffee 'berries' made one 'feel better'.

Milestones

1100 - First known cultivation of coffee in Arabia
1475 - First coffee shop opens
1600 - Coffee begins to enter europe
1822 - First espresso machine invented by Dr. Earnest Illy.
1865 - Coffee perculator invented by James Mason.
1901 - Instant coffee invented by Satori Kato
1902 - Coffee filter paper patented. Invented by Melitta Benz, a housewife from Germany. Melitta went on to found a company producing coffee products which later invented vacuum packing (1962).
1995 - Coffee becomes the world's most popular beverage

Coffee Growing Regions

Beans such as Java, Mocha, or Kona have unique flavour and aroma. But, like wine, the area in which they are grown also plays a huge part in the taste, aroma and other characteristics of the final product.

Coffee is predominantly grown in Africa, Arabia, Asia, Latin America and North America.

About Organic and Fairtrade Coffee

Organic Coffee

Organic coffee is grown in a totally natural environment without artificial aids and fertlisers. It is kinder to the soil, kinder to the environment and does not contian the quantity of harmful residues non organic coffee may contain.

Fair Trade Coffee

Coffee is one of the most widely traded commodoties in the world. However despite huge demand, the price of coffee beans is very low whilst the retail price of the final product remains relatively high. Fair trade coffee attempts to redress this balance by passing more money onto the farmer.

There is continuing debate over whether a reasonable proportion of fair trade coffee actually finds its way to the farmer or whether it is still absorbed by the retailers and other parties in the supply chain.
